Design and Development of Adaptable e-learning System for Improving Education in Neuromuscular Disease Affected Children.

Co-Principal Investigator, INDIAN COUNCIL OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH (ICSSR), New Delhi

As per the review, various neuromuscular disorders like DMD, BMD and LGMD are increasing at an alarming rate among children of primary age. Interestingly in United Kingdom and USA, people of Indian ethnic background has been identified to be the highest among other civilians who affected badly from DMD or muscular dystrophy disorders. In contrast, people belonging to Muslim community from Bihar, West Bengal and Bangladesh had higher frequency or symptoms of DMD compared to Hindu civilians from Eastern India region. A latest report generated from Ministry of health Informatics in 2013 showed that DMD and other neuromuscular disorders are increasing at an alarming rate and cause several visual, audio and other kind of impairments among children of primary age. On the basis of published reports, nearly 30, 000 cases have been present in India and approx. 3000 being added every year. These disorders enhance the reading, sitting, writing, spelling, walking and other disability among children. Therefore, our prime focus is to provide training and develop learning management systems (LMS) game driven system for such children and provide adaptable content to them according to their needs, preferences by implementing an e-learning web portal which improves their educational needs and preferences.

Thesis Work:
  • Due to lack of an inappropriate course content sequencing, classification, categorization and prediction of learner on the basis of their performance and providing security to E-learning system by removing threats there is a need to develop an intelligent computing method based E-learning system that integrate soft computing and probabilistic based techniques like Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Data Mining (DM), Case based Reasoning (CBR), Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Petri nets with usage of forward hidden states, security metrics, psychological and cognitive parameters for providing adaptive learning content according to learner interest, goal, preferences and skills. The main objective of the thesis is to reduce learning cost, provide flexible course delivery according to learner characteristics and behavior, gathers more efficient approaches for learning activities such as learning path sequencing, object recommendation and optimization of course delivery with the help of intelligent computing techniques which improve performance of learner.
